Niall is fully qualified in providing Clinical Hypnosis and loves using this approach to help people manage and overcome any fear or anxiety they may feel about coming to the dentist. Hypnosis is a proven way of helping and can produce incredibly successful and sustainable results.
Why does it work so well?
Primarily, using hypnosis works so well as it allows you to relax. It is impossible to be anxious and relaxed at the same time so once you feel very relaxed it makes the whole experience so much easier for you. It also allows you to help yourself. It does this by encouraging your mind to be open to altering the negative association that you have developed towards dentistry. These associations can develop subconsciously and are often associated with a bad experience some years ago. Most people openly appreciate that such fears are irrational whenever dentistry has progressed so much in this day and age- particularly when your comfort and safety is a real priority to us. Despite this, such subconscious anxieties can be incredibly limiting and put many people off returning for routine dental care. Hypnosis provides you with the opportunity to change this to a much more positive and healthy relationship. As you can imagine this can be extremely liberating and people find it very beneficial to their long term oral health. It is accepted that an essential element of successful N20 (happy air) sedation is hypnotic suggestion so for this reason nitrous oxide sedation can be used to complement the technique.
Is it like hypnosis on the TV?!
Not at all! You will always be safe. There are many myths about hypnosis that lead people to be sceptical – mostly due to the role that stage-hypnosis plays in the world of entertainment but when performed by an appropriately trained health professional it is a very safe and effective technique. It should be remembered that you will never do anything that is against your will or beliefs and you are always in complete control throughout. Most people are in fact surprised by how enjoyable an experience it is.
