Removable/Permanent Retainers Overview

Retainers are designed to keep your teeth straight and can either be fixed to the teeth or removable.

For more information, please refer to the FAQ’s below:

Additional Information

What is a retainer?

Now that your teeth are straight, if you do not wear your retainer, your teeth are likely to drift towards their original positions. If this happens it may be difficult, if not impossible, to correct.

How long will I have to wear the retainers?

Retention is for life. The only way we can guarantee your teeth will remain in place following treatment is permanent retention. The retainer may be removable or fixed, and if removable, it may mean wearing it all the time at first, before going on to only night-time wear.

Eamon will always advise on what the best option is for you, post treatment.

How might the retainer affect me?

Your speech may be different with a removable retainer. With a removable retainer you may also find yourself swallowing a lot to begin with. This is quite normal and will quickly pass.

If you have a fixed retainer then you will need to take extra care to keep it clean.

Can I eat normally?

Yes, you can eat as normal. Whether you have been instructed to eat with your retainer in or out, always take care to avoid sugary treats.

What about brushing my teeth?

It is important you brush well and keep up with a good oral health routine pre and post treatment.

If possible carry a brush with you for use after lunch.

Take the retainer out when brushing and be sure to give it a gentle brushing also but be mindful not to damage any wires.
