Safe Dental Care for Expecting Mothers

October 28, 2015

Congratulations! You’re expecting. As your body changes, so does your oral hygiene, so here are tips on how to safely care for your teeth and gums during your pregnancy. Remember, pregnant women are more susceptible to gingivitis and periodontal disease, which increases the chances of premature birth.

Treat Swelling Gums:

Because of your body’s hormonal changes, you have a higher chance of developing gum disease. It is crucial to stick to your dental hygiene routine to remove trapped food. You may also want to gargle warm salt water to help with the inflammation.

Increase Flossing Habits:

Morning sickness might put up a fight during your pregnancy, and flavoured toothpaste may become the bane of your existence. Try to switch to natural toothpaste instead, or – if that doesn’t work – be sure to focus heavily on extra flossing to combat increased plaque caused by those extra carbs.

Use a Soft Toothbrush:

Switch to a soft toothbrush and brush twice a day (especially after vomiting). The soft bristles are gentle and less likely to irritate your gums.

Stick to a Healthy Diet

You’re now feeding two people and the health of your child’s gums and teeth rely on your healthy food intake. Be mindful of your consumption: your baby’s first teeth develop as early as 3 months into your pregnancy! Fruits and vegetables are great at polishing your teeth and gums while infusing you with vitamins and minerals.
