6 Recent Advances in Orthodontics

July 30, 2016

The world of orthodontics and dentistry has seen some major advancements over the last couple of decades. So, here are 6 of the most significant advancements which are explained to you in laymen’s terms…

  • Dental X-rays

The introduction of the original X-rays were a huge development in medicine and dentistry. Now, digital X-rays are the next step up as they allow your dentist to view the image in a matter of seconds as opposed to waiting around for the image to develop. Safer and emitting significantly less radiation than traditional X-rays, digital X-rays offer ease and a better understanding for patient and dentist alike. The patient is able to learn from the X-ray; it facilitates the dentist’s job of explaining what can often be complicated dental jargon!  The dentist can work with a clear and immediate visual of their patient’s condition, rendering the treatment process more efficient.

  • Dental Implants

Dental implants are the next best thing to a real tooth. Dental implants are titanium screws inserted into the gum and then topped with a crown or dental bridge. They can be maintained in exactly the same way as a real tooth while eliminating the hassle and embarrassment of false teeth, enabling you to enjoy the foods you love.

  • iTero Scanner

This impressive piece of kit is a Godsend for both orthodontists and patients. Gone are the days of annoying impressions that are uncomfortable and inaccurate. This scanner produces 7 times fewer fitting issues and 10 times fewer rejections. As the impressions are taken digitally, this also means your orthodontist can send off your impressions direct from the computer, saving time and hassle.

  • Six Month Smiles

Straightening your teeth has never been faster with Six Month Smiles. These 6 month braces amalgamate the best aspects of traditional braces treatment with the aesthetics of ‘invisible’ braces, making them a highly popular teeth-straightening method. They have components such as brackets and wires though these are clear and tooth-coloured.

A round up of the benefits:

      • Safe and painless.
      • Barely visible to others.
      • Teeth are straightened in a quarter of the time (compared to traditional braces treatment).
      • Low-force and gentle positioning.
      • Cost-effective.

    1. Invisalign

Perhaps one of the more well-known advancements in orthodontics, Invisalign is a teeth-straightening  treatment that uses clear, removable aligners. Inconspicuous and non-invasive, Invisalign assigns much of the responsibility to the patient. As they’re replaced by the patient at home, the need for check-ups throughout treatment is less than with other brace treatments. Invisalign has been very popular with celebrities such as Niall Horan, Eva Longoria and Tom Cruise.

  • Inman Aligner

A highly popular choice for special occasions, the Inman aligner can straighten your front teeth in 6-18 weeks. This is a very popular choice for patients who are about to get married and do not wish to undergo 2 years of brace treatment. Safe and non-invasive, Inman aligners are removable, so you can continue enjoying the foods you love and clean the aligner more effectively than with fixed appliances which can be difficult to tackle due to the brackets and archwires.
