Mouth guards Overview
Dental mouth guards are used to protect the teeth, gums and supporting tissues from damage, injury and trauma while playing sports.
Mouth guards are used in sports where deliberate or accidental impacts to the face and jaw may cause harm. Mouth guards may also prevent or reduce concussion. In many sports, it is compulsory to wear a mouth guard.
There are two types of mouth guards—over the counter and custom made. While over the counter guards are helpful for occasional use, many dental patients require the benefit of a customised dental mouth guard fitted by a dentist to effectively prevent injury. An impression of the teeth is taken to create a best-fit mouth guard.
