How to Brush Your Teeth Properly

The Proper Brushing Technique

Start with holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the gum. Short gentle strokes are recommended. Brushing too hard can cause your gums to recede. Brush in small circular motions.  An area that is often forgotten about is your tongue. Brushing your tongue will help your breath stay fresh and reduce the levels of odour-producing bacteria. You can brush your tongue gently with a regular toothbrush or with a double-sided one which has a special tongue brush.

Should I Brush or Floss First?

It is important to do both to keep your teeth healthy. Daily flossing is important as your toothbrush can’t reach tight spaces between your teeth. Regular flossing can help reduce gum disease as it helps remove plaque that forms along the gum line. Be gentle to the gums when using the floss to prevent any bleeding in the between-teeth spaces.

How Long Should I Brush My Teeth For?

Proper brushing of your teeth takes at least two minutes. 120 seconds twice a day is the minimum time required to brush them correctly. This can be broken down into 30 seconds brushing every section of your mouth. To help, a timer can be set on your phone to ensure you’re spending enough time brushing.

Is Mouthwash Necessary?

Mouthwash can help remove any food or bacteria that were missed from brushing. It is important to check the ingredients in mouthwashes as some contain alcohol that would not be suitable for children. A mouthwash that contains fluoride can help protect your teeth from tooth decay.

How Often Should You Change Your Toothbrush?

Microbes grow on your toothbrush bristles – that’s why it is important to replace your toothbrush every three to four months. The bristle of your toothbrush will wear over time and will prevent you from cleaning your gums effectively.
