Teeth whitening – the lowdown

A dentist is an absolute must if you’re thinking about getting your teeth whitened. It’s often tempting to avoid paying a little extra for a safer procedure, though it’s important to remember that doing down this route could cause permanent damage to your teeth. What’s more, you may end up spending money on trying to reverse the damage!

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments available and has an extremely high satisfaction rate. It is a bespoke treatment – you can select the colour you would like to have at a consultation with one of our highly trained cosmetic dentists.

The benefits of teeth whitening are of course, a great new smile. However, it also improves you overall health and allows you to ‘reset’ your dental health. Before our cosmetic dentist whitens your teeth, you will undergo a scale and polish (a full scale clean of your teeth). Any plaque and tartar will be removed before the procedure, as this will also contribute to your teeth appearing whiter and healthier. As plaque and tartar can lead to gum disease, this process is of huge importance to your overall health.

Why teeth whitening?

Overtime, your teeth deal with a lot of wear and tear which impacts upon their colour – inevitably. The tannis in red wine, the acid in citrus fruits and the sugar in sweets all contribute to changing the colour and shade of your teeth. Old age and the passing of time are factors that cause patients to seek treatment for discoloured teeth.

Some causes of stained teeth include:

  • Smoking.
  • Drinking alcohol.
  • Drinking lots of carbonated (fizzy) drinks.
  • Eating sugary foods.
  • Failing to brush and floss properly.

How does it work?

Your dentist will create custom trays, designed to the exact structure of your teeth, rendering the process safe and effective. Contrary to the whitening trays sold over-the-counter, custom trays protect your teeth from any danger, such as the whitening agent leaking through into your gums as a result of them not being the right size.
