Good Oral Health

Good oral care is important for our overall well-being.  We all know the importance of brushing your teeth but taking care of your toothbrush is equally as important!

History of toothbrushesPrior to the toothbrush, there have been records of other means to practice good oral care.  Chewsticks: twigs with a frayed end, were found to have been used by the Babylonians as far back as 3500 B.C.  The other end was pointed to be used as a toothpick.  Other devices were created for years to come, including brushes made of feathers or animal hair. The practice of brushing teeth routinely wasn’t common in the United States until after World War II.  The first nylon bristle toothbrush was put into stores on February 24, 1938.

How can I ensure good oral hygiene today?  We now know the importance of brushing our teeth, but it’s just as important to take care of our toothbrush! Dentists recommend that you’re changing it every 3 months.  Once the bristles are worn down they are not as effective at removing plaque from your teeth and gums. Be sure to store it in an upright position and let it dry. Also in order to avoid reinfection, remember to change your toothbrush after a flu, infection or cold.

When you brush your teeth properly, at least twice a day, you are removing the plaque that causes cavities. Plaque is the soft and sticky substance that accumulates on the teeth from food debris and bacteria. Flossing daily will remove the plaque from in between the teeth that the toothbrush cannot reach. Removing plaque from your teeth also helps to prevent gum disease.

Taking care of your teeth can help you to look and feel better, so just remember to take care of the tools you use to keep your teeth clean too!
