Five and Shine

Most people know that it’s important to brush our teeth at least twice a day, but when it comes to order and technique do you know your stuff? From flossing to washing: here is our five step approach to maintaining healthy teeth and gums

Step one, the floss

Flossing between teeth before you brush ensures you have removed that hard to reach plaque which can build up during the day. Working from back to front with a new, clean, strand of floss per tooth will prevent contamination and prepare your mouth for brushing

Step two, arm yourself

With so many different brands of toothpaste and brushes on the market it can be hard to know which is the most suitable for your smile. We recommend fluoride toothpaste (with or without a whitening agent) and a brush with soft bristles. When it comes to electric verses manual it really is personal choice, but do bear in mind that you should buy a new brush or tip approximately twice a year. If you have particularly sensitive teeth it may be walso orth using specialist toothpaste to tackle this problem. We are here also to support you so why not have a chat with our dentists here at Boyne regarding the best products for your personal pearls?

Step Tree, Brush technique

Load up your brush and, starting with the back, move the bristles in a circle motion over the surface of your teeth: this can be easier with an electric brush so do take care that you scrub, not only the teeth, but also your gums, leaving a thin layer of toothpaste over the surface. Next, move on to the underside and backs of the teeth, you should brush for 2 mins without rinsing. Then add a little cold water and repeat the process, taking care to discard the excess saliva and toothpaste into the sink.

Step four, Rinse

Next, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash to complete the routine. Mouthwash combats three issues and whether you use an all on one, or a targeted brand, will depend on your personal needs. For fresher breath and general clean feeling, go for a cosmetic mouthwash, to fight decay we recommend and antiseptic, and, for more serious decay concerns, its worth enquiring into the use of one with added fluoride supplements.

Step Five: ask for advice

Even the most dedicated brusher may find they encounter issues with their teeth and, checking in with your dentist and discussing concerns, can help to put your mind at ease. They are best placed ro discuss your brushing routine and suggest if further investigation is needed.
