Fear of the Dentist

Why do people fear the dentist?  Dental phobia is on the rise in Ireland, one in ten people avoiding visiting the dentist even when they are in great pain. People are afraid and anxious for many different reasons.  Fear of pain, a bad childhood experience, a fear of injection or a fear of the aesthetic side effects.

Fear of needles is a common one. If you require an injection during your visit to the dentist, they will provide you with effective numbing gel. Some patients fear develops from a bad experience. The procedure might have been more painful than anticipated and worry that a visit in the future will be the same experience. People may feel their teeth aren’t in great condition and feel embarrassed about visiting the dentist.

How do I stop being anxious at the dentist? There are many ways to help manage your dental fear

Tips for staying calm during your visit to the Dentist

  • Inform the Dentist

It is important to share your feelings. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask your dentist to explain the procedure before doing it as it helps to alleviate any fear of the unknown.  Agree on a hand signal that you can communicate with your dentist to stop the procedure.

  • Avoid Certain Food

It is recommended to avoid caffeine drinks and sugary foods before the appointment to help.

  • Distract Yourself

Patients have found listening to music or podcast while there in the waiting rooms and in the dental chair helps them to relax.  Occupy your hands with a small hand object is another distraction that works.
