Summer sun sends demand for pearly whites sky high

April 10, 2015

Fine weather has started to make an appearance which means (at last!) summer is just about here. But is the colour of your teeth stopping you from smiling? If so, the increasingly popular take-home tooth whitening kit could be for you.

What’s a take-home teeth whitening kit?
A home whitening kit involves a visit to your dentist for impressions to make whitening trays, a bit like a sports mouthguard, to put specialised bleach in. Along with the trays you get eight syringes of bleach, and you can choose either 10 per cent or 16 per cent bleach depending on the results you want. You then wear the trays every day at home for at least three hours, usually during the night.

How long does tooth whitening take?
With the home whitening kit you will see a difference within five to seven days.

Is bleaching permanent?
Bleaching isn’t permanent, it lasts for one to three years. With regular touch ups and visits to your hygienist you will be able to maintain your white smile easily.

What happens afterwards?
You’ll be advised to cut down on drinks and food that stain teeth such as tea, coffee and wine, and to cut down or stop smoking. You’ll also be encouraged to brush and floss twice a day.

Side effects
When guided and monitored by a professional, the side effects are usually slight sensitivity of the teeth. This can last from a few hours to a few days after treatment. The gums may get irritated due to seepage of bleach from the trays. Rubbing a sensitise toothpaste or gel on the affected teeth or gums lessens any temporary discomfort.

Is tooth whitening suitable for everyone?
No. Tooth bleaching isn’t for you if:
• You are a child
• You are or could be pregnant or your are lactating
• You have cavities, gum disease, exposed roots, incomplete dental work or tooth hypersensitivity
• You have had restoration work such as bonded fillings, veneers or crowns on the front teeth (these may be replaced after bleaching)
• You are allergic to peroxides

0215Where can I get a home whitening kit?
