Fissure Sealants

Placing fissure sealant’s is a simple pain-free procedure which can be done by any of our dentists and does not require any anaesthetic. The teeth are cleaned, etched and then dried. The liquid coating (sealant) will then be painted on the tooth/teeth and set with a light until its hard. It will take less than 5 mins per tooth to place the fissure sealant. Following this procedure, you are able to eat and drink straight away as the sealant will be completely set.

Fissure sealants are clear so blend in well with the teeth and can’t be seen when talking.

The best time to get fissure sealants done is between the age of 5 – 14 (when the first and second permanent molars appear).

Fissure sealants can last between 5 – 10 years and will be checked regularly by your dentist when you go in for check-up appointments. They can be replaced if they fall out or become worn down over time, but replacement is not always required. This is because teeth are most prone to decay when they first erupt but after a number of years, they are strong enough to avoid becoming damaged.

Because they are clear in colour and are placed on the back teeth, they cannot be seen when a child talks or smiles.

Yes. Sealants are only one part of a child’s preventative dental care. It is still important that teeth are brushed twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. The sealed surfaces will now be easier to clean when tooth-brushing. It is also important that children don’t eat a lot of sugary foods and drinks especially between meals. These should be kept as treats or for special occasions.
